Welcoming loved ones for their first winter

Clothing, transportation and outings: our tips for family arriving from warm countries, and the activities that make winter enjoyable.

Welcoming loved ones for their first winter

Dressing for the cold

Edmonton winters are dry and very cold, with temperatures that can drop below −30 °C. Plan for several layers, a warm coat, insulated boots, a toque and gloves.

Getting around in winter

ETS buses and the LRT run all year. For trips outside the city, organized transportation avoids driving on snowy roads.

Enjoying winter

  • Winter festivals: Ice on Whyte, Deep Freeze and the Flying Canoë Volant.
  • Indoor outings, such as the Royal Alberta Museum or the Muttart Conservatory.
  • Northern lights nights, away from the city lights.

Our tip

Tell us when your loved ones are visiting: we’ll prepare a program suited to the season and their pace.
