Fall in Edmonton’s River Valley: 6 ways to enjoy it like a local

A green ribbon through the city

Edmonton’s River Valley is the largest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America, with more than 160 km of maintained trails along the North Saskatchewan River. In autumn, the aspens and poplars turn gold, the air is crisp and the paths are quieter than in summer.

1. Walk the Mill Creek Ravine

A peaceful trail under the trees, just minutes from Whyte Avenue. Ideal for a morning walk, followed by coffee in Old Strathcona.

2. Cross the Walterdale Bridge

This elegant arch bridge offers some of the best views of the river and the downtown skyline. Come at sunset for the light.

3. Ride the funicular to the river

From downtown, the 100 Street Funicular takes you down to Louise McKinney Riverfront Park in a minute, with a panoramic view on the way.

4. Visit the Muttart Conservatory

Its four glass pyramids are an Edmonton landmark. Inside, gardens from different climates make it a perfect stop on a cool day.

5. Picnic at Hawrelak Park

A large park with a lake, open lawns and colourful trees, loved by families on fall weekends.

6. Bike the valley trails

Many trails are shared by walkers and cyclists. Renting a bike is an easy way to cover more ground in a few hours.

Our tip

Fall is short in Alberta. Bring layers, good shoes and check the weather before you go. Our Edmonton City Highlights tour explores the River Valley and downtown with a local guide, at your group’s pace.
